Becoming Like Jesus
Are you intrigued by that title? How could you not be? You and I know all too well that we’re always messing up (which is a polite way of saying: “We’re always sinning!”) God knows that, too. And infinitely better than we do!
At the same time, God’s love that has claimed us as His own in Holy Baptism … God’s Son who has paid the price for our sins … and God the Holy Spirit who gives us faith … they all are at work to make us want to sin less. To do better. To “become like Jesus.” That’s our great desire!
And yes, with God’s help, we are able to make some improvements along the way. At other times it seems like we’re taking 2 steps forward and 3 steps back! We have such a long, long way to go to ever come close to “becoming like Jesus.”
So here’s some good news. 1 John 3 begins with a reminder of the lavish nature of God’s love for us. His love in Jesus that makes us His own children. But that’s not where the passage ends! In the very next verse, John writes:
“But we know that when He (Jesus) appears, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.” (1 John 3:2)
That’s good news on top of good news, isn’t it? Right now, God has made us His dearly-loved children. And when our Savior reappears on the Last Day, we will be made like Jesus! There’s nothing more we could ever want, is there? Right now, we belong to God … and later, we will become like Jesus!
Do you wonder why John was led to record those promises? It’s because the Christ-followers of his day were being tempted to misbehave. To act immorally, as if it didn’t really matter. To sin. It was a heresy called “Gnosticism.”
We are tempted today to do the same. But how could we? By God’s grace, we have been called His holy children. And soon, we shall be like Jesus.
With that in mind, may sin have no place in our lives. And may Jesus transform every part of us!
